Lorraine Hansberry Lorraine Hansberry was the brilliant author of “Raisin in the Sun,” “Young Gifted and Black,” “Les Blancs,” “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window,” “The Drinking Gourd,” “The Movement,” and “What Use are Flowers?” She was the youngest playwright and first Black, to win the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play of the Year. for “Raisin in the Sun,” which propelled her into the media spotlight. Her work reflected the struggles for civil rights and Black liberation in the US at the time. What is less known is that she was both a communist and a lesbian at a time when being either was a cause for investigation by government agencies

During WBAI’s May Fund drive Out-FM will host a special on the life and work of Lorraine Hansberry. Included in the presentation will be selections from Robert Nemiroff’s star studed production, “Lorraine Hansberry in Her Own Words”. More than 60 famed actors participated in creating this outstanding production, which includes selections from many of her plays. Queer Black Cinema, Singer Shaz Oye, and Cuba's Fight Against Homophobia.

Out-FM Associate Producer Renair Amin interviews Angel L. Brown, the founder of Queer Black Cinema, (also known as QBC). QBC is a non - for - profit fiscally sponsored volunteered- run monthly micro - cinema series and annual festival dedicated to showcasing independent narrative and documentary works by U.S. and international Black LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) filmmakers. Also an update on a Queer Media Conference in Brooklyn in May.

John Riley interviews Black Irish activist and singer Shaz Oye in part 2 of a 3 part interview.

Out-FM Associate Jennifer Wager brings us a report about Cuba's recent efforts to eradicate homophobia via legislation and participation in the International Day Against Homophobia. Interview subjects include Mariela Castro Espín, the director of CENESEX (National Center for Sex Education).
