Review by John Riley

Holding Trevor is a movie I wanted to like, it had many dramatic possibilities. Unfortunately the script, written by Brent Gorski, didn't deliver. Basic information about the characters lives is absent. Trevor's former boyfriend Darrell, now a friend with benefits, is a junkie in a co-dependent relationship with Trevor. Obnoxious and clearly addicted, Darrell lacks any history which might explain his addiction. Trevor's female roommate Andie has a bit more depth which saves the movie. Trevor's new boyfriend Ephram, the fabulously handsome Eli Kranski), is a doctor who saved the life of exboyfriend Darrell early in the movie. Strangly the only thing Ephram and Trevor have in common is the charmless Darrell. Trevor's best friend Jake, is catty, obnoxious and a beautiful and brilliant emerging musician whose skill is almost ignored by Trevor.

The movie deals with AIDS, addiction, mental illness, alcoholism, codependency, and a search for meaning. With all of those issues, it seems like it could have been great, but the characters were too shallow, they didn't seem real, they didn't have histories that connected them to each other in ways that made their behavior plausible.

Gorski's heart was in the right place. While disappointing, the movie isn't boring, it just isn't enough. If Mr. Gorski improve shis character's depth by revealing more of their histories and class background, he might be able to effectively convey his message and story. If I had to give the movie stars, I'd give it two out of 5.
