On Today’s Out-FM, join Donna Redd, Pedro Angel Serrano, John Riley and
Brad Taylor for a discussion on lesbian self-defense and the impact of
the conviction of 7 lesbians for defending themselves against a male
attacker. You'll also hear a history of the historical contributions of
transgender activist Silvia Rivera, and a commentary by Pedro Angle
Serrano.
John Riley, Donna Redd and Pedro Serrano interview defense lawyer Susan Tipograph on the case of the New Jersey 7. According to this group of Black lesbians, they were assaulted verbally and physically by Dwayne Buckle in the West Village in August 2006. All have been convicted of assault for defending a couple of the women. Three face a minimum of 3.5-15 years in state prision, one faces 5-20 years in jail. Famed lesbian defense attorney Susan Tipograph tells their story.

The bi-annual journal for City College’s Center for Puertorican Studies is called Centro Journal and the recent issue is titled Queer Puertorican Sexualities. One of the contributors to the issue is Jesse Gan – a Chinese-Phillipino-American trans woman from the Bay Area who is on the faculty at the Unversity of Michigan. Her essay in the Centro Journal is a brilliant portrait of Sylvia Rivera. Gan was one of the presenters at the recent CUNY conference launching the new Centro Journal issue. Brad Taylor was there and recorded this talk.
