Today's presentation titled “Revolution in Nepal and LGBT Liberation” is an ambitious task that can not do full justice to the subject in one hour and thus can only serve to begin a discussion. This is the first of a multipart presentation.
Last Month Sunil Pant of the Blue Diamond Society, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group in Nepal, came to the US to receive awards from prominent LGBT organizations here. The International Lesbian and Gay Human Rights Commission, and the Astrea foundation both gave awards to the Sunil Pant and the Blue Diamond Society for their exemplary work in fighting to advance LGBT rights.
While he was in New York Sunil Pant gave an indepth interview to Out-FM about revolution in Nepal, the big problem of homophobia in Nepal's male dominiated Hindu Society, and a new problem with the Communist Youth League (CYL) which seems, according to recent newspaper accounts, to be out of control of the Communist Party of Nepal Maoist. The CYL is acting in violent ways toward a number of groups including gays, lesbians and transgender people. Newspaper accounts report that the Communist Party of Nepal condemns this violence and is calling for it to cease. At the same time communist ministers in the interim government have reportedly made homophobic remarks. We'll hear part one, right after this follow up announcement about the sentencing hearing of 4 of the NJ 7 which we did a segment about last week and is available on the station's archives or at outfm.org.
