Tessa Majors Remembrance in Morningside Park, Dec. 2019
Discussion of recent attacks in Harlem’s Morningside Park and what they mean about structural inequality and racism, and the lack of programs to address them, in the city. We’ll focus on the murder of Barnard student Tessa Majors in December 2019 and the grievous assault on our own Bob Lederer in April 2019. In this segment, two of Out-FM’s cohosts, Bob Lederer and John Riley (Bob's partner/husband) will actually be guests, along with Iesha Sekou, founder and CEO of Street Corner Resources, a Harlem-based anti-violence community organization. Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of an assault upon him in Morningside Park, from which he is largely but not fully recovered. Violence in Morningside Park has been widely publicized since Tessa’s murder, but is also a problem in other parts of the city. Panelists will discuss what can be done to address the underlying causes of the violence and what we need to be vigilant about as we witness the upcoming trials of children alleged to have been involved with the robbery/murder of Tessa. The joint interview will be hosted by Naomi Brussel.
