In July 2022, Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury who is the world leader of the Anglican and Episcopal Church, reinforced the doctrine created in 1998 by reiterating that: “homosexual practice as inconsistent with scripture.” To LGBTQI Christians the statement was "Like a kick in the gut" according to Craig Watson, co-leader of Diverse Church, a community for LGBTQ+ people of faith.

Craig Watson of Diverse Church in New Zealand
The Anglican Church has been one of the bellwether churches for LGBTQI Christian with the American Branch, the Episcopal Church, sanctioning LGBTQ clergy, including bishops. But the split within the church, has kept progress at bay in many place, like New Zealand. In this episode of Out-FM, co-host John Riley interviews Craig Watson about his experience with the Anglican and Baptist churches and the homophobia and homohatred that he experienced.
Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby
Craig Watson was constructively dismissed from the Anglican Church because he came out of the closet and because the church was his employer and they refused to continue to sponsor his work permit, he was forced to return to New Zealand. His appeals to Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury and other higher level clergy were ignored, dispite the history of projects working together that Watson had with Welby.
Bishop Justin Duckworth of Wellington, New Zealand
Watson recounts the reiteration of Justin Welby's statement about homosexuality by Bishop Justin Duckworth of Wellington, New Zealand who decides church policy on LGBTQ relationships in his diocese.
