The implications of the passing and signing of the recent Anti- Queer/Kill the Gays Bill in Uganda is the subject of tonight’s OUT FM broadcast on WBAI 99.5 FM and WBAI.org broadcast.
On May 30th AP reported that the Uganda president Yoweri Museveni signed into law an antigay law condemned by LGBTQ+ and human rights activists.
The Ugandan bill doesn’t criminalize those identifying as LGBTQ+ . A previous version of the law was more draconian which would have criminalized even those who said they were LGBTQ+ and was sent back to the legislature to differentiate between those identifying as LGBTQ+ and those actually engaging in homosexual acts.
But the revised bill does still prescribe the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” which is defined as cases of sexual relations involving people infected with HIV as well as with minors and other categories of vulnerable people.
The antigay legislation is another step in an anti LGBTQ campaign that began in the 2000s and resulted in the “Kill the Gays” bill which was heavily promoted in Uganda by Scott Lively, the president of Abiding Truth Ministries. The anti-LGBTQ campaign he led was attacked by lawsuits.
Pepe Onziema, Human Rights Defender
Joining us to talk about the lawsuit against arch-homophobe Scott Lively is Pamela Spees from the Center for Constitutional Rights and Pepe Onziema, a longtime human rights activist in Uganda and SMUG’s Program director before the program was shut down by the government last year. Onziema will discuss that case and the current dire situation in Uganda where rampant discrimination, violence, blackmail and even kidnapping is occurring.
Also joining us will be WBAI’s own Milton Allimadi who will cover the geopolitical implications of the Museveni regime’s actions .Join us for a deeper understanding of the role of the U. S. especially the evangelical far right’s intense promotion of anti gay sentiment, as a basis for the Museveni government’s criminal prosecution of Queers to divert the public’s attention from serious climate, ecological and economic problems in Uganda and the region.
