45 Years of AIDS

45 Years of AIDS: Remembrance and Action

On Friday June 5th was the 45th anniversary of the publication of the first report by a federal agency on a new infectious disease that is now called HIV/AIDS. This year in New york city activists gathered at the AIDS memorial, which honors the 150,000 people who died of AIDS in the state. More than 100,000 deaths were in New York City alone. Activists from ACT UP/NY, Housing Works, Prep for All, and physician leaders of the city, and federal departments were in attendance among others.

Tonight we'll hear some of the comments from some of the participants. The first recording is of the comments of Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, who served in the NYC Dept of Health and later at the CDC until 2025, when he and others resigned because the agency was off its mission. He is followed by Dr. Oni Blackstock, founder/director of Health Justice; Peppermint, a trans woman actor, singer, performer and advocate; and ACT UP co-founder and long-term AIDS survivor Eric Sawyer. The segment begins with the song "Living in Wartime," by Michael Callen. Recording was made by John Riley.

Film Showing & Book Talk: Who Controls the Narrative?

On Fri., June 12 at 8pm ET, the Ida B. Wells Media Defense Network -- which defends political speech/media against repression, and works to amplify voices from the margins via the media -- is having a two-part online event: 1) showing “The Occupation of the American Mind,” a documentary on the decades-long Israeli propaganda war in the US that’s kept military aid flowing to Israel; & 2) a talk by Emmaia Gelman -- queer activist and founder of the Institute for Critical Study of Zionism -- about her new book The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State. The corporate media’s manipulated coverage of the situation in Palestine/Israel is key to understanding why it’s taken so long for US attitudes to change, & why recent events have lifted the veil on Israel’s brutality.

Following Oct. 2023, the Israeli military invaded the Gaza Strip. For 2 years, defying international law & a court finding of plausible genocide, Israel: obliterated Gaza’s cities; killed an estimated 70,000-200,000 civilians, including many children, & injured far more; displaced millions of civilians; & cut off food imports. US college students protested this genocide & demanded their universities stop investing in Israel.

ACT UP/NY has refused to be silent on this. One example: In May 2024 ACT UP & Jewish Voice for Peace held a 150-strong rally during a media award ceremony by the well-funded GLAAD, a 40-year-old watchdog against negative media representations of queer/trans people. The protest demanded that GLAAD sever joint work with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which had added ALL Palestine solidarity events to its tallies of “anti-semitic” incidents. The ADL also brought US police to Israel for training in crowd control by high-level military personnel.

Emmaia Gelman wrote at the time, “The ADL is a right-wing, racist organization pushing for the genocide of Palestinians. The ADL says it advocates for civil rights, but it has a long history of attacking us. It is spreading disinformation about anti-genocide protests that are led by brave Palestinian, Jewish & queer students. It has called us terrorists. It has called for violent policing of protest. The ADL is pushing legislation to criminalize us, bills that smear antiracist protesters as “antisemites” or “terror supporters.”
