Out-FM's John Riley interviews Maxx Boykin of the Save HIV Funding Campaign and Black South Rising on the battle to save lives. Since President Trump’s inauguration on January 2025, his administration has implemented a strategic attack on AIDS funding for research, treatment and prevention that is global in nature. Through a program called the Department of Government Efficency (DOGE), Trump immediately paused new funding for grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including for AIDS research. He also paused funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). PEPFAR funds HIV/AIDS treatment throughout the developing world, enabling countries to buy inexpensive but effective HIV treatments and modern prevention methods. These cuts have affected millions worldwide and are causing increased deaths already. Maxx Boykin talks about the growing fightback to save health care for people with HIV and AIDS in the US and abroad.
