Segment 1: Israel, Zionism and the Genocidal War on Gaza

Destruction in Gaza 2023

More than 1,030 Palestinian children in Gaza have been killed by Israeli forces since October 7 -- about one child every 15 minutes, and more than one-third of the total death toll.

Out-FM’s Naomi Brussel speaks with two U.S.-based activists for Palestinian rights, one Palestinian and one Jewish North American about the current Israeli genocidal campaign in Gaza, and what role queers can play in solidarity with Palestine. They will also report on the recent two-day conference of the new Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism, held in New York City and Santa Cruz, CA.

Guests:

Emmaia Gelman is guest faculty in Social Sciences at Sarah Lawrence College and the founding Director of the Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism, which examines the transnational work of Zionist political and ideological institutions. She researches the history of ideas about race, queerness, safety, and rights as levers in political culture, and is co-chair of the American Studies Association Caucus on Academic and Community Activism. She is writing a critical history of the Anti-Defamation League (1913-1990) as a Cold War neoconservative institution. Emmaia is a longtime activist on queer and antiracist issues, primarily in New York City, and the parent of three brilliant and compassionate kids.

"Queer API History: Why It's Vitally Relevant for Today's Struggle for Social Justices in the United States and Beyond."

From

From "Farewell My Concubine"

Few people -- even in the LGBTQ/queer Asian/Pacific Islander (API) community -- know the long history of people in the Asia/Pacific region who anticipate contemporary LGBTQ identities. This history should be of far more than academic interest and of interest far beyond the queer API community. It goes to the heart of the strategy that LGBTQ communities of color and human rights activists can and should use in challenging homophobic and transphobic reactionaries both in the United States and in the Asia/Pacific region.

On this program, transgender activist Pauline Park will engage in a conversation with Out-FM about this fascinating hidden history and how it can be used to illuminate contemporary debates and inspire effective action to advance a progressive agenda of social justice and social change. For more on trans history, go to Pauline's website.

Sakia Gunn Mural

The “Sakia, Sakia, Sakia, Sakia” mural along the McCarter Highway was painted by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh in memory of Sakia Gunn in 2016 as a part of the Newark downtown district’s Gateways to Newark initiative, “Portraits.”
