Walela Nehanda - author: Bless the Blood

Walela Nehanda (they/them),
30 yrs old, non-gender binary, author, cancer survivor, cultural critic

Interview by Stahimili Mapp
Music: Changes, by Tupac Shakur

We at Out FM are pleased to welcome a young writer, Walela Nehanda. She is here with us to discuss her stunning debute book Bless the Blood: A Cancer Memoir.

Walela, who was diagnosed with advanced leukemia at aged 23, wrote this memoir to help process her illness, contemplate her own death, document the racism and uncaring nature of the U.S. medical system, and dance with her ancestors. Our conversation covers her response to all of the above and more.

This is a new, young voice who, it has been said, writes in the tradition of Audre Lorde. She does not disappoint.
