A promotional video announcement for the original full show broadcast in March is posted here.

Tune into Out-FM for excerpts from an interview with Ericka Huggins, queer Black Panther Party leader, longtime educator, and former political prisoner, by co-producers Stahimili Mapp and Bob Lederer. Sister Ericka discusses the new book she’s published with photographer Stephen Shames titled Comrade Sisters: Women of the Black Panther Party.

Sister Ericka discusses what first drew her to the Black Panthers, and then the remarkable women she profiles in the book and the persistent failure of both the Black and white media to portray the 66% of Party members who were women. She also explains the significance of the Party’s Community Survival Programs and the philosophy and practice of the Oakland Community School that she directed from 1973-1981.

Part 2 - 8:00 - 9:00 PM EDT:

Angela Davis & Lorraine Hansberry
Interview with Bettina Aptheker, author of Communists in Closets

Lorraine Hansberry

Author and activist Lorraine Hansberry

Tune into Out-FM for excerpts of the program last year about the brilliant Black playwright Lorraine Hansberry, who died in 1965 at age 34. Hansberry was a far more committed feminist and socialist than popular culture has portrayed – and was also a lesbian who wrote fierce pro-feminist (but anonymous) letters to a leading lesbian magazine in the '50s. This broadcast will include excerpts of Bob Lederer’s interview last fall with Professor Bettina Aptheker, author of the remarkable history book, Communists in Closets, which includes a chapter on Hansberry. Professor Aptheker explains how Hansberry was schooled by what she calls the Black communist intelligentsia surrounding the Party in the 1950s. This program will include excerpts from WBAI’s 1967 documentary titled "Lorraine Hansberry in Her Own Words," courtesy of the Pacifica Radio Archive. You’ll hear excerpts from major Hollywood names, including Paul Robeson, paying tribute and reading Hansberry’s writings.

Gifts available to donors:

We’ll encourage listeners to show their support for Out-FM and WBAI by making a donation for one of several gifts being offered.

To donate, call (212) 209-2950 or go to give2wbai.org.

•    For a $77 donation, you’ll receive a printed copy of Comrade Sisters: Women of the Black Panther Party, by Stephen Shames and Ericka Huggins.

•    For a $50 donation, you’ll receive an electronic version of Dr. Aptheker’s book, Communists in Closets. Aptheker's book explores the history of non-heterosexual people in the Communist Party USA, which banned lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from membership between 1938 and 1992. The book includes an in-depth chapter on Lorraine Hansberry.

•    For a $99 donation, you’ll receive the Best of BAI jump-drive, with excerpts from many of your favorite shows. More about that on the air.

•    For a commitment to donate $15 a month or more, you can become a BAI Buddy (in the name of your favorite show – hopefully Out-FM!). This will keep a steady lifeline of monthly funds flowing into WBAI to cover our basic operating expenses.
