This lifetime achievment award is given by CLAGS, the City College Lesbian and Gay Studies Deptartment. Dean Spade is a founder of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project which serves trans people’s legal needs.
In Part 1, available on our website, courtesy of CLAGS, Dean Spade discussed how the system uses fake reforms to recuperate. The reforms are only for public relations and don’t provide actual relief, or just tinker at the edges for a few people. He also discusses 5 liberal myths that are dangerous to organizers.
In tonight’s presentation, Dean Spade outlines his criteria for judging whether activist organizing projects are progressive or not, and includes the criteria of a few other organizers. He discusses the importance of direct aid to marginalized people and what criteria to judge whether a project which deals with direct AID is good or a liberal nightmare project.

John Riley brings you an exerpt from a speech given by renown activist and intellectual Dean Spade at the Kessler Award ceremony given by CLAGS, the Center for LGBTQ Studies, housed at the graduate center of the City College of NY. Spade’s intersectional analysis is essential to learn from as we enter the Trump Era. Intersectionality is the study of the interplay of race, sex, class in how oppressive institutions function. He discusses why organizers must see past liberal myths that will styme real change and not be satisfied with lipservice or reforms that are only for a select few. Activist and academic Dean Spade is a transgender man who helped found the Sylvia Rivera Law Project.
