UPDATE: Out-FM Broadcast on WBAI Imperiled

Details
Published: 31 August 2016

UPDATE: Under pressure from listener members, Out-FM, The Personal Computer Show and Where We Live will continue to be Broadcast, but at new times. For Out-FM we will be broadcast Tuesdays at 9pm. However, we remain imperiled and this is a provisional assignment. Please keep the letters coming and of course support the show and the station in the upcoming fund drive. Urge station management to engage in respectful dialog  with affected producers before making program changes and to roll-back the changes until that happens. Out-FM will be on the air tonight, Tue 9/6 at 9pm with a special show.

The Personal Computer Show will be on at 9pm Wed, and Where We Live will be broadcast at 9pm on Thursday.

Below are some remarks we made last week including contact information for your letters of support for our show.

 This year marks Out-FM’s 20th anniversary. Sadly, tonight we must report that Out-FM has been cancelled from the broadcast air. This will be our last program on 99.5 FM at 7pm on Tuesday evening -- to be transferred, we are told, to a podcast. More on that later, including what you can do to make your voice heard with the decision-makers at WBAI and our parent organization, the Pacifica Radio Network.

What is happening to Out-FM and other shows on WBAI

So it is with great sadness that we inform you of our removal from the broadcast schedule. WBAI's General Manager, Berthold Reimers, recently decided, without any consultation with us, that after tonight, Out-FM will no longer be on the air at 7pm. Mr. Reimers said the show will be available as a podcast beginning in September. It is unclear how that will occur, as the infrastructure for podcasting doesn’t yet exist and details about how that is to occur have not been forthcoming. Mr. Reimers  also informed the producers of "The Personal Computer Show" -- now aired Wednesdays at 8 PM -- that their show is also to be moved to a "podcast." A range of other changes is being made. At the recent Local Station Board meeting where the changes were announced, Mr. Reimers, in response to a question about the extent of the changes responded:

Mr. Reimers has stated publicly that the current round of changes was necessitated by the urgent need to raise more funds, and may affect 20 to 30 percent of the station's programming, and that "if I had my way," he might change up to 70 percent of the shows.

Dozens of other WBAI producers are working with us to try to halt these precipitious changes and to institute a fair process for program evaluation and decision-making.

We believe Mr. Reimer’s decision to take us off the broadcast air is a major loss for the WBAI audience and for the LGBT community. We join our fellow and sister producers in urging you to write letters expressing your opinion about these actions to these 4 email addresses:

•   Pacifica Interim Executive Director Lydia Brazon <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.;

•   The Pacifica National Board <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.;

•   And the Local Station Board (LSB) via the address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., which will forward it to the local board.

The LGBT movement for liberation is far from over. While there have been gains in the quest for equality, the fight against HIV/AIDS is far from over. Out-FM has covered the most recent efforts to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in NY state by 2020. That is a battle in progress. It is a proof of concept that if successful could be an inspiration to the US and the world that this epidemic could and must end. The struggle for civil rights, ranging from housing to employment has a long way to go. Equal pay for equal work is an issue for all sectors of the LGBT movement, but especially Lesbians and Trans people.

We are uncertain about how you will be able to get our podcast. If you want to us to send you that information when we have it, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

You can also join us on our Facebook group called Out FM

There you will be able to find updates and eventually instructions on how to tune in.

However, it is best you write us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. That way we can email you when information is available.

And now, for our final broadcast program in the 7pm time slot, we will present the voices of several activists and journalists who have appeared on these airwaves, some as producers, others as guests, over the past decade. We'd like them to share their thoughts about what Out FM has meant to them.
