Out-FM brings you the fascinating story behind the story of the August 15 announcement that the Hollywood Academy has finally apologized to the Indigenous actor and activist, Sacheen Littlefeather, who 49 years ago explained to 75 million viewers why The Godfather star Marlon Brando was declining his award -- and took racist abuse and job exclusion. Brando acted in support of the Wounded Knee occupation by the American Indian Movement that was then being boycotted by the corporate media.
On Out-FM, we lay out the amazing achievements of both activists before and after this first-ever political statement at an Oscars ceremony. This includes Brando’s civil disobedience arrest for demanding indigenous fishing rights in Washington State and his political statements and large donations to the civil rights movement and Black Panther Party. It also includes Littlefeather's years of working to increase Indigenous representation in media and her advocacy and institution-building for Indigenous people with HIV/AIDS. Especially relevant for Out-FM’s focus, Brando later publicly announced his bisexuality, although it was in the French press and was never picked up by U.S. media. Thus this episode is part of our Queerly Defiant series.
This program was produced by Out-FM's Bob Lederer along with his student intern, Indigenous gay college student Elijah Weaver, in his radio debut. Thanks to John Riley for production assistance.

ACT UP Protest at Senator Schumer's NY Office
After 2 ½ years of battling Covid 19, with 555 deaths occurring daily in the US, now we have another viral epidemic called Monkeypox, a virus similar but not as lethal as smallpox.
Tonight we’ll be discussing some of the knotty problems associated with the disease. We’ll be focusing on why the disease is happening when there exists effective vaccines and treatments for the disease.
We’re joined in studio by James Krellenstein, of the AIDS Activist group Prep4all, who was one of the organizers of the activist response to the failures of the federal, state and local government response to the Monkeypox outbreak. Click here to find out more.
