World AIDS Day Action Focuses on Brutal Global and Domestic Program Slashes

The Trump presidency is turning out to be a disaster worldwide for many people with AIDS, many of whom may lose their lives from it. At the activist forefront of fighting President Trump’s devastating and illegal budget cuts have been AIDS activists. One of the groups fighting at a worldwide level is Health GAP. This Global Access Project advocates for inexpensive generic AIDS drugs, funded in part by developed nations, through the Global Fund and through a US government program called PEPFAR. That’s short for the Presidential Emergency Program for AIDS Relief.  Joining us to discuss this was Asia Russell, a longtime ACT UP/Philadelphia member and co-founder of Health GAP, now its director.

John Riley also spoke with ACT UP/Pittsburgh re-founding member Michael Tikili about how the chapter has focused its efforts since its refounding in June of this year. Michael discussed the newly formed ACT UP/Nation, which has spurred the rebirth of several ACT UP chapters including in Cleveland, Boston, and Pittsburgh. He also discussed the upcoming actions to mark World AIDS Day next Monday.

Queer Activist on Solidarity Action with Detained Migrants

John Mark Rozendaal is at left.

John Mark Rozendaal is a queer activist who has enjoyed a career as a performing ‘cellist; and is now directing his efforts to organizing and activism for climate justice, justice for Palestine, justice for immigrants.

On November 22, John Mark was in Florida to participate in non-violent protests at Alligator Alcatraz and Krome Processing Center along with members of POP for Climate (Planet Over Profit) and Sunrise Movement. Alligator Alcatraz and Krome Processing Center are Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers located in the Florida Everglades in Miccosukkee tribal lands, just west of Miami. Both of these facilities are notorious for inhumane treatment of detainees; environmental damage; and disregard for both tribal sovereignty and U.S. law.

John Mark was one of the 31 people arrested, including both non-violent protesters and journalists, at the Krome Processing Center.

In the past year, educators and students all over the U.S. have been faced with repression of speech, particularly on the issue of the Israeli-US genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank of the Jordan River. Out-FM's Pauline Park and Naomi Brussel interviewed educators Gav Meiri and Naomi Braine about the attacks on faculty and students at Brooklyn College and other sectors of the City University of New York (CUNY). Gav Meiri of Educators for Palestine discusses the situation of CUNY faculty and students who support Palestine. Naomi Braine, a sociology professor at Brooklyn College, discusses her role as a supporter of both Palestinian rights and student rights.
