Nick Str8 Up Queer African

Nick Hadikwa Mwaluko - Str8 Up Queer African

On Out-FM this Tues., Stahimili Mapp will be in conversation with author Nick Hadikwa Mwaluko, who is a trans Tanzanian-American writer. We'll be talking to him about his new book Str8 Up Queer African. In this book, Nick “crafts an unflinching, yet delicate tapestry, of queer African existence. The volume, an assemblage of short stories, essays and poems lies in anticipatory stillness, ready to awaken the curiosity of its readership Mwaluko’s prose and verse, to navigate the treacherous waters of coming of age, the metamorphoses of transitioning, and the scars of violence borne by those who inhabit the intersections of multiple marginalized identities.”

Nick Hadikwa Mwaluko (pronoun agnostic / gender atheist) is a queer, non-binary trans, third culture Tanzanian-American and award winning writer with three books: Waafrika (UnCut / Voices Press, 2013); its sequel Waafrika 123 (UnCut / Voices Press, 2016) and Str8 Up Queer African (Scientists & Poets, 2023). Nick's companion essay to Waafrika 123 entiled XXYX Queer Africa; More Invisible, originally published in Juked, was in Best American Essays 2020. Nick's essay A Love letter to My Gay Black Brother Andre Alexander Lancaster was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Nick holds a B.A. (Magna Cum Laude) and MFA (Point Scholar), both from Columbia University. For more, please visit: https://newplayexchange.org/users/169/nick-hadikwa-mwaluko
