Behind ICE's Murder of Queer Woman Renee Good: Rising Immigrant Solidarity

The brazen murder of 37-year-old Minneapolis queer woman Renee Nicole Macklin Good on January 7th by an agent of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was only the latest episode in an intensifying campaign of racist repression and suppression of dissent. The Trace (a newsroom investigating gun violence) has identified 16 incidents in the past year in which immigration agents opened fire -- resulting in at least 4 deaths and 7 injuries -- and another 15 incidents in which agents held someone at gunpoint since Trump’s immigration crackdown began last June. These have gotten very little national media attention compared to Renee’s murder. This includes the shooting death of Keith Porter Jr., an African American, by an off-duty ICE agent on New Year’s Eve, and a shooting by an ICE agent in Portland, Oregon, last week, which wounded Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras and Luis David Nico Moncada. Also, since Trump’s inauguration, there have been 32 reported deaths in ICE custody. Both in the shootings and deaths in custody, nearly all targeted were people of color. ICE is currently holding about 69,000 people nationwide, a figure that will rise further after Congress added $170 billion in new ICE funding, including $14 billion for detention—nearly triple its previous budget.

ICE Out of NYC & Died in ICE Camp

Renee was the latest example, a courageous poet and mother of three determined to support her siblings of color, especially migrants from Somalia and other Global South countries. Her killing sparked over 1,000 angry "No Kings, No ICE" demonstrations nationwide. This murder was fueled by misogyny and hatred of perceived white "traitors." Meanwhile, corporate media reporting as usual largely equalized the Trump Administration's lies about Renee's "domestic terrorism" and the truth about what she actually did -- despite multiple, clear videos to the contrary. The reader/viewer was left to sort it out. At the same time, many media outlets -- even some progressive ones -- continued the age-old invisibilizing of queer lives, at least in initial reporting. 

In the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul, communities of color -- especially Somalis -- have borne the brunt of this rising terrorism. Increasingly, longtime residents are being violently snatched from their homes, kidnapped and incarcerated, and migrants and allies alike are being sprayed with toxic agents and arrested.

On this special Out-FM program, Naomi Brussel and Bob Lederer talked about these all these issues and more with three Minneapolis-based guests:

•     Mira Altobell-Resendez, a non-binary Minnesotan fighting for legalization for all and an end to deportations with the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee,
•     Jess Sundin, a longtime community organizer active in the community response to the current massive, militarized ICE deployment in Minnesota. She is a leader of Freedom Road Socialist Organization; organizer with Twin Cities Coalition for Justice; and a grand jury resister, targeted by the FBI for her international solidarity work. She is also a lesbian mom, who lives just blocks from where Renee Good was killed by ICE agents last week.
•     Malika Dahir, a Somali community activist who is Executive Director of Reviving the Islamic Sisterhood for Empowerment (RISE).

Statement about Renee from her wife Becca Good -- who was present and outraged at the killing -- paid tribute to Renee's "kindness...and overarching belief that...we are here to love each other, care for each other, and keep each other safe." Becca added, "On Wednesday, January 7th, we stopped to support our neighbors. We had whistles. They had guns."

TAKE ACTION AGAINST ICE - STOP DEPORTATIONS!

JUSTICE FOR RENEE GOOD AND ALL ATTACKED BY ICE

There are several ways people nationwide can take action on these issues:

NATIONAL:

• Neither Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer nor House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have used their leverage with the appropriations process to cut the ICE budget, so you can let them know your views. 
• You can also sign a petition from Care2 Team to the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to “investigate this shooting and hold the officers who killed Renee Nicole Good accountable."
• For Minnesota actions and to donate in support of migrant support efforts and mutual aid there, visit the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC).

​LOCAL (NYC/NYS):

• New York residents can urge their state representatives to support the New York For All bill, which the Immigrant Defense Project says will end the state’s complicity in ICE’s cruel deportation agenda. 
• New Yorkers can also learn of the frequent vigils and protests of ICE by Rise and Resist.
• The New York Immigration Coalition and Hands Off NYC train people to support and defend migrants and organize public actions.

In this segment, we offer some information you may not hear elsewhere about the U.S. government’s outrageous attack on Venezuela, including the kidnapping of its president and another senior political leader that caused 60 deaths, including those of 32 Cubans, and about the devastating impact of economic sanctions on the population. The Trump administration has engaged in a huge propaganda blitz, so here is a different view, followed by parts of an earlier Out-FM segment from a gay Venezuelan perspective.

First, we’ll hear an article written Saturday by Michelle Ellner, the Latin America Campaign Coordinator at CODEPINK, a feminist grassroots organization working to end U.S. warfare and imperialism. Ms. Ellner begins by referring to Trump’s announcement on Saturday about the military attack and kidnapping.

Next, we think it's important to play excerpts of an Out-FM interview about Venezuela from our archive, recorded in 2019. Many of the issues are still relevant today. Out-FM's John Riley interviewed Ricardo Julio Sanchez, a representative of a consortium of Venezuelan LGBT activist groups that came with the Venezuelan delegation to the United Nations. John asked him about the impact of the trade embargo on people as a whole and people with HIV/AIDS in particular and about their healthcare system.
