Activist & Organizer Leslie Cagan
Join Out-FM Producers Naomi Brussel, Pauline Park and John Riley for an interview with Leslie Cagan about her extraordinary life of organizing and deep involvement with the LGBTQ movements. We'll discuss her early years with her activist family and later as she became aware of her attraction to women.
Leslie has organized in peace and justice movements for more than 60 years. From the Vietnam war to racism at home, nuclear disarmament to lesbian/gay liberation, support of Palestinian rights to normalizing relations with Cuba, fighting sexism to confronting police brutality, she’s been a central organizer in many struggles.
From 2002 to 2009, Leslie was the National Coordinator of United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of 1,400 groups central to the movement against the war in Iraq. Her coalition-building and organizing skills have mobilized millions of people in many of the nation’s largest demonstrations, including the 1982 million-person Nuclear Disarmament demonstration in NYC; the historic 1987 lesbian/gay rights march on Washington; massive mobilizations against the Iraq War from 2003 to 2007; the 2014 People’s Climate March in NYC; and the 2019 Queer Liberation March in NYC on the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.
While most known for her role in mass mobilizations, Leslie has been centrally involved in a range of organizing efforts the serving as the field director in the 1989 David Dinkins mayoral campaign to the struggle to save Pacifica Radio in the early 2000s; from the fight for abortion and reproductive rights more broadly to serving on the National Board of Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition; and other struggles.

For the past two and half years Leslie has been deeply involved in the work to end the Israeli genocidal war in Gaza as well as the growing movement to stop the march toward fascism in this country.
Her writings appear in 11 anthologies and in scores of print and online outlets; she has done more workshops, conference presentations, and speeches at rallies than she can count.

With the rise of far-right governments in this country and worldwide hurtling toward a latter-day racist and anti-queer fascism, it’s all the more urgent to study important forms of anti-fascism from the past. This segment is Part 2 of a two-part interview that Out-FM’s Pauline Park and Bob Lederer did last December. We spoke at length with Dr. Jud Newborn, an anthropologist who has analyzed all forms of Nazism and the Holocaust, and is also one of the world’s foremost historians of the White Rose. The White Rose was the clandestine Munich-based group of college students that resisted Nazi Germany, the main co-founder of which was a gay man, Hans Scholl. Hans has been eclipsed by his more famous and equally courageous sister, Sophie Scholl. In Part 1, Dr. Newborn explained how anti-gay Nazi policies played a pivotal role in the radicalization of the Scholl siblings, helping turn them into exemplars of civil courage.
Part 2 starts with a question from Pauline about the Nazis destruction of homosexuals within their own ranks, followed by the horrors inflicted on gay men in the concentration camps. We end by having Dr. Newborn share stories of some of the courageous gay men and lesbians who fought in various types of resistance groups to undermine the Nazis in various parts of occupied Europe.
Dr. Jud Newborn is a pioneer in the creation of modern Holocaust museums, who served as Founding Historian of New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage. Dr, Newborn is an acclaimed multimedia storyteller, lecturer, author and two-time Emmy Award winner, who has presented his programs coast-to-coast, at the United Nations, and from Canada to Cape Town. He is co-author of the now classic book, Sophie Scholl and the White Rose, which has been reprinted repeatedly, most recently in 2023, and has been translated into many languages. He has also written for The New York Times, Jerusalem Post and Smithsonian Magazine, among other publications. He is also a longtime member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. Dr. Newborn was honored in 2018 with the prestigious Spirit of Anne Frank Human Writes Award. Jud Newborn today is the Producer of Special Guest Programs for Long Island's Cinema Arts Centre, which for years has been a solid supporter of WBAI
