Jamaican trans activists describe their struggle to maintain their creative fashion work in an intensely exploitative system. They discuss ambivalence about staying in Jamaica or seeking asylum elseware. We bring you an excerpt of sound from the event Amanda Taylor organized at the Barnard Center for Research on Women, titled Black, Queer & Trans: Mobilizing in the Caribbean and Beyond.

On May 10, 2022 East 68 Street at Lexington Ave. in Manhattan, was renamed Audre Lorde Way. This is notable as Lorde attended both Hunter High School and Hunter College located on that very street. In addition she went on to become a professor of poetry there in 1981. Scholars, politicians, lesbian activists and students gathered to give remarks on this auspicious occasion, three of which are presented to night: YA author Jaqueline Woodson, Historian Professor Blanche Wiesen Cook and professor of anthropology Dr. Jacqueline Nassy Brown.

Heron Greenesmith of Political Research Associates

Imara Jones of TransLash
As the white evangelical Christian Right increasingly drives the Republican legislative agenda, both at the state level and in federal judicial appointments, we discussed the nationally coordinated attacks on LGBTQI folks, and especially on the trans community. We also discussed the clear connections to the assaults on abortion rights, honest education about structural racism (falsely labeled "Critical Race Theory"), and related issues. Our guests were:
- Heron Greenesmith, a policy attorney and Senior Research Analyst with Political Research Associates, a group that monitors the right wing, based in Boston. Greenesmith has over a decade of LGBTQ advocacy experience. They are an adjunct Professor of Law at Boston University Law School, an Antibigotry Fellow with the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University, and an Editorial Board Member at the Bulletin of Applied Trans Studies. They identify as agender and bisexual.
-
Imara Jones is an Emmy and Peabody award-winning journalist, intersectional-news producer, and creator of TransLash, which was featured in The Guardian’s coverage of the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Imara is currently a Soros Equality Fellow and chaired the first-ever UN High Level Meeting on Gender Diversity.
We discussed the growing infrastructure of billionaire-funded right-wing think tanks, policy shops and organizing centers dedicated to ensuring the passage of the maximum number of state bills to systematically demonize and even criminalize trans people, especially children, while steadily chipping away at the hard-won rights of teachers to foster open education and honest discussion about LGBTQ concerns in their classrooms. We also talked about the crucial importance of building solidarity among all the population groups under attack from the right.
