Deana Ayers (they/them)

Deana Ayers (they/them)

Progressive young activists on incorporating queer identity and issues into their organizing. Naomi Brussel interviews Deana Ayers and Sarah Philips on their lives and work in the progressive movement. The conversation explores changes which have developed over recent generations for LGBTIQ identified activists.

Deana Ayers (they/them) is a Black nonbinary political educator. They first began doing abolitionist work in January, through the reproductive justice organization on their campus. Since then they have worked on political education through their writing, a study group, and social media. Deana currently works as the Political Education Coordinator at Black Visions in Minneapolis, MN.

Sara Philips

Sara Philips - South Asian Abolitionist Organizer

Also joining the conversation is Sarah Philips. Sarah Philips is queer South Asian abolitionist organizer, community educator, and writer from Texas, currently studying Asian American Studies. As an organizer, she has pressured her university to divest from police, served on the steering committee for the Mutual Aid Collective ATX and the Coalition Against Sexual Misconduct at UT Austin, and organized against Hindu fascism in India and the diaspora. She also works as an educator—facilitating teach-ins, panels, and digital spaces around topics such as abolition of the prison industrial complex, organizing the South Asian community in the southern US, and navigating protest safety and surveillance as a young organizer.
